Constant imaginary conversations

We go about our days with a machinery of imaginary conversations or monologues from relevant people in our lives, whether in the past or present, dead or alive.

It’s easy to take them seriously, or not even be aware of this background state. We are inevitably shaped by the people around us, especially while growing up. Our current preferences, choices, and situations stem to a significant degree from what close people have modeled for us over time.

We are, among other things, a collection of multiple people. Who woke up today—and who will wake up tomorrow?

Since these constant conversations are mere appearances in consciousness—like thoughts or any other sensations—they need not dictate our every choice.

We can continue to practice recognizing and clarifying reality, spacious and unspoiled as it is.
