What’s the difference between a Sunday and a Tuesday
What’s the difference between a Sunday and a Tuesday, or a Saturday and a Wednesday? At a very fundamental level, there is no difference. So why does one day feel different than another (for most people, me included)?
In general, people don’t work on Sunday in Western cultures. There is no obligation or expectation from other people about something you should do. This makes Sunday different from Tuesday, for example, at the first level of analysis.
Still, this is a shallow explanation that is based on shared customs. Certainly very valuable and those customs are there for a reason, blah blah.
Now let’s go one level deeper. One could make a religious argument. Sunday/Saturday is a sacred day in <insert religion>, which means one takes the day off from work and dedicates it to something more divine and greater than the daily practicalities of survival.
That’s also a fair and valuable explanation, which, however, remains shallow, because the unresolved question is what the fundamental difference is between one day and another.
If you take away all the rational or spiritual explanations, what is the difference?
What would be there if there were no calendars and no conception of days, weeks, months, but only of time passing (which is not pure fiction but something real for humanity until some decades ago).
The truth is that there is no fundamental difference between a Sunday and a Tuesday, or any other day. When you strip away all the rationalizations, there is nothing left. There is only space, silence or noise.
So what prevents one from experiencing the relaxation, joy, and other positive emotions often associated with weekends on any other day of the week? Nothing, fundamentally, nothing prevents you from experiencing those same sensations on a Tuesday as opposed to on a Saturday.
So why don’t we all implement this? Wouldn’t it make every interaction and action much more enjoyable because there is nothing to look forward to, nothing to escape from? Wouldn’t this shift in perception make you (the individual) and us (the group) much more effective because of the inherent joy and satisfaction in everything done?
I don’t know, that’s what I am pondering.
What do you think?
