You are always in the practice

A friend once told me about his daily meditation practice—30 minutes every morning for more than 5 years, without missing a single day. It had become such an ingrained part of his routine that he recently noticed something paradoxical: though he meditates to cultivate awareness and mental clarity, the practice itself had transformed into a mindless ritual he performs automatically each morning.

There are practices, and there is the Practice. Throughout life, you practice many things—cooking, running, dressing, brushing your teeth. When you first begin a practice, your engagement is intense and focused. Yet as you repeat an action over time, your awareness gradually fades. Any activity can become mechanical, slipping quietly from your conscious memory.

There exists a different approach to life—one founded on Practice with a capital P. As Ido Portal describes it, Practice envelops every action and aspect of your life. It serves as the container that brings complete presence and intention to everything you do.

Capital P Practice involves discomfort; a beginner’s mind capable of putting itself out there fully naked and accepting the seeming failure and mistakes and embarrassment that comes from such a state. Therefore, the student (you) is one who is capable of ascending into the Practice and fully leaning into the process of transformation and nakedness inherently involved in it.

Every moment is Practice. This is it—no rehearsal. The Practice is both playful and profound, spontaneous yet deliberate. It engages both body and mind equally. In this state, you shed the weight of accumulated experiences and reconnect with your innate childlike wonder and playfulness.

It's a paradox—you take it seriously, yet maintain lightness. You learn to let go while staying grounded. You embrace this as your complete reality while functioning seamlessly in modern society. Like a lion at rest, you remain naturally alert yet deeply relaxed. The Practice becomes your constant state of being. You disentangle all the extra adipose tissue surrounding the Practice, to get closer to the truth, rather than remaining forever trapped in the stories you build up around the truth.
